Prof. Heiner C. Bucher, emeritus

Heiner C. Bucher is a clinical epidemiologist and MD, board certified in General Internal Medicine and in Prevention and Public Health (FMH) and was an attending physician at University Hospital Basel until his retirement. He was the chair of Clinical Epidemiology at University of Basel from 2001 to 2021 and lecturer at ETH Zürich from 2018 to 2021. His research focus is in the generation of Real World Evidence in the area of infectious diseases (HIV and antibiotic stewardship in primary care). He has published extensively on the effectiveness and side effects of antiretroviral therapy, HIV related cancer and cardiovascular disease using data from the Swiss HIV Cohort Study and international cohort projects. He has lead numerous clinical trials aiming at optimizing antibiotic use in primary care. His methodological work has been very influential. He developed the first method for indirect comparison in meta-analysis the so called ‘Bucher method’.
